Distortion is caused by the aspect ratio on the picture. For example, if you are trying to fit a 4x6 picture into a 16x9 screen, the picture is going to appear flattened and distorted.

There are two things you can do:

1) you can change the aspect ratio by CROPPING. Cropping is VERY easy to do with free programs like Picasa (if you don't use it - it's free and I recommend it completely). Crop the picture to fit the aspect ratio you are going for

or

2) you can add "filler" (black, white) to the sides or top of the picture to stop it from distorting. For example, if you are fitting a 4x6 picture into a 16:9 screen, you would expand the canvas and add some color to the sides. This way, it would not distort. The only programs I know that do this are photoshop (industry-standard) or GIMP. GIMP is free and a great program, but there is a little bit of a learning curve associated with it. But there are other cool effects you can do once you start to learn it. Basically with the free programs: Picasa and GIMP, there's not much you can't do.

scale the picture to the desired size in a photo editing app, for example photoshop, then upload it again and put it into your layout.
