Most likely the problem isn't that the circuit is overloaded but that the wires supplying power to that gang of outlets are lose and not making a good connection...this is a problem i have repaired many times....if it was overloaded the breaker would knock....this does need immediate attention as it is a fire hazard....

How do you know the power is "killed"? Is there someting plugged into the other outlet in this fixture that stops working at the same time that you plug in the second "item"?
If that's the case, and no fuses or circuit breakers blow or trip, and the "item" works OK in another outlet, then I'm stumped, but it the same "item" seems to "kill" the power in any outlet that you select, and still no fuses blow or circuit breakers trip, you need to call an electician before the fire department arrives, and probably should discard the "item".

Sounds like you have a defective outlet. Find the breaker/fuse for that circuit turn it off and replace the outlet with the same type. Match the wire color to the screws. White to silver, black to brass and ground to green or bear copper wire. When done turn power back on and check to see if problem remains. If you do not feel that you can do it yourself, call an electrician. Electricity is nothing to fool around with.

I think it is more than surpassing the capacity of the circuit. Check the plug to see if it is wired correctly. It sounds as if the outlet is shorting out. You can purchase cheap(cost wise) testers that will tell you whether or not things are hooked up right.

sounds like it's overloading the circuit. I had a microwave that used to do that. Try moving it to a different outlet & see if it works. You may have too much on that circuit. Try using an outlet on a different wall, if possible.
