I persoanally think that starving yourself is among the women community that need attention. America is the biggest country, with the biggest source of food, yet we have women eating tons of food, then throwing it up. Then women who don't eat at all. I think we should put these people in a 3rd World country where they don't have the oppertunity to eat. Maybe that will change thier mind ?

it's all about self image and acceptance by others
people want to fit in, in many cases people will do what ever it takes to fit in. since thin is the status quo image of beauty, many young girls, even young boys mind you, turn to starvation to lose weight. it's one of the quickest and easist ways to lose weight, but also one of the most destructive to the body

Most anorexics are women up to 80% but at least twenty percent are male. Im not an anorexic but i have been to a third world country(Africa) and im not sure that would really change them. Any eating disorder is an emotional and mental illness as well as physical. The reasons that someone may become belimic or anorexic are endless.

The attention true anorexics seek is not the straightforward, "look at me" attention. Most often these are women who feel they have no control over their lives. All expectations and judgments are external, coming from parents, family, social class, peers, etc. They have been taught that image is important, substance is not, leaving them little choice but to conform to expected appearances. Internalizing these standards, they become their own enforcers, leaving little independent personality to develop. The anorectic realizes that the one permissible avenue for self-expression is to outperform the standards. By starving herself, she becomes thinner than the thin ideal, demonstrates a measure of control over her life and the people around her, and only incidentally, gets attention.

The important issues are external, superficial values and a sense of control. People with the disease have reprogrammed their reactions to things like hunger cues and their own appearance. They effectively cannot see how they appear to others. That's part of their internal control, a way of coping with feelings of hopelessness by exploiting what they can. It becomes their reality and is very difficult to unprogram.

There are anorexic men, not nearly as many, because men are seldom judged strictly on their appearance. But among preofessions with similar, externally imposed, artificial standards of appearance, the numbers are higher than average.

They aren't, men also have anorexia. This is an eating disorder that many have no control over. Some of these people die because no matter how much weight they lose, they still see themselves as fat.
Why are you so angry and unsympathetic toward your fellow man? I don't wish you any harm, but I do hope that something or someone in your life can teach you about compassion.♥

my friend, who is male, went to a hospital to treatment of anorexia nervosa. 1/10 anorexia patients are male. It's a coping mechanism for depression and pain and suffering in one's life.

Women are not the only ones who are, the are the only ones really shown doing it, so it looks like ONLY women are. I think it may be statistically more women than men, but not only women.
