what makes a good song, that resonates with people? also does anybody know how to stop the 'streams of consciousness' that happens when I write sometimes, can't seem to relay the message in a way that others understand.

Streams of consciousness happen when you want to say too much at once. It never works, at least it is confusing for others. Fix on one aspect and then work on that

Here's the deal about song writing. Write every song based upon a personal experience; however, hide it within a poem that people can relate to, yet, they won't know what exactly you've been through. Write vague words, but tell a story. Keep in mind James Taylor never wrote a song that rhymed within a certain structure, he just told a story. People will listen and admire a story more than meaningless rhymes. Most of all, like I said before.... WRITE FROM THE HEART AND SOMETHING THAT HAS AFFECTED YOU! The audience will think and create their own take.

Anything can make a great song. And some people will say not to do the "streams of conciousness" thing... I miss that, I really do. Kurt Cobain did that all the time, and he defined a generation. Sometimes you can use that to show a sort of build-up of a song, as more thoughts come into play in your song. Then solo!!! YAAAY SOLOS!!!

what makes a good song?hmm thats a good question on it's own,a great hook or intro i think is actually the most important thing in a pop song layla, imagine, where the streets have no name and a million others. When writing songs it varies with different artists as to how they go about it.the best ideas i've ever had seem to come when im dozing off to sleep or its like a bolt of lightning coming from nowhere.I believe everyone has a number one pop hit somewhere in themselves. You should perhaps try writing with other musicians too, this often helps if you don't think somethin your doin is good he may correct you and vice versa.Good luck and hopefully i'll hear your number one hit in the charts in the future.

Write the lyrics first, have a clear rhythym that is constant, don't change it at random. Have verses, a chorus and a break. In the tune have four bar phrases and use question and answer to make a memorable tune. Write the tune of the chorus first and use it to make the intro and the hook.
