because its impossible for india to become affluent over night, too massive a population. it will take a very long time for average living standards to rise to a decent level, if ever.

Firstly, as you have yourself stated, atheism versus theism does not come into this debate at all, unless you are suggesting theocracy as an alternative to democracy. Secondly, democracy is flawed, deeply so; however it is the best system in common usage. If a better system can be invented, let it happen soon. But more to the point, our politicians are poor because of the party system and the principle of party allegiance and the party line. This feature is not an actual requirement of democracy, but it is the reason why rubbish politicians are let in. The voters cannot choose who they want. They can only choose who the political parties want. If there are a small number of parties, and the party puts the money up for the candidate (and make no mistake, money buys the publicity), then the voter will know nothing except the party messages. BTW Churchill was disliked by alarge number of people too, once the second world war was over. That's why Clement Atlee got to be PM in a contest directly against Churchill. Being a wartime leader and a peacetime leader are very different things, and it is the former that brought Churchill his adulation.

See, you can't really say that politicians are not bothered about the nation. Yes, i do agree that some are corrupt but that doesn't mean that they don't care about the nation. It is said that "within every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader." And talking about the poor people in our country isn't it the duty of we, the citizens also to help them??Have you heard the popular saying ," Don't ask what the country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country."??

Sir,
Because Selfishness replaced Patriotism.
The definition of a politician today is :
One who doesnot know the history of his own constituency ( leave alone state and country) and .....
One who has lots of money and ...
One who uses muscle power to gain any and everything (no brains required)...
One who purchases his ticket for MLA giri or MP giri and naturally makes business out of it...
I suggest let these MLAs and MPs etc are put into National Legislature Academies and taught history and parliamnetary practices to make them aware of their rights and responsibilities properly BEFORE they sit in Assembly / Parliament. No powers to be given till they complete full one/two years course at National Legislature Academy.
If an IAS/IPS officer has to undergo so much training why not a MLA / MP ??

The politicians are absolutely money-minded. They don't care what is happening to the rest of the country, as long as they and their families are happy and contented. That's the problem with the Indian government.

they have shame?....nah nah nah...they r shameless
as long as they get a clear supply of money, their own needs are met and their life is as good as hell....what care do they have about the nation?
actually, much of the problems may stop if corruption stopped, but that may give rise to other serious problems...our needs may not be met properly
i feel that population is the basic problem....but we cant do anything to bring such mighty changes---either the law wont allow, or people wont....
what to do?
i think follow the steps of lalu yadav: he has been credible --no doubt---i thought him to be an absolute fool---but nah..he has proved himself thoroughly
we can only introduce small reforms eventually going on to the bigger ones.....this might take time, but steadily n surely:we can win the race

It is the poor who votes the politicians by listening to their false promises of providing basic necessities like water, electricity, shelter, clothing etc. They poor easily believe because they have no choice, the politicians benefit from it and ensure that the poor remain poor, to their benefit..

You are seemingly telling us that all the ills are because of the politicians only. We think ourselves to be the genious!
Politicians are from amongst us only and until we change in our attitudes, we can not get better politicians.
