Forcing blacks to change their hair to fit "Anglo" standards is ignorant and indirect racism. It's not cheap or easy for blacks, especially women, to manage their hair, to keep it straight, and generally cornrolls, etc last a long time and don't require much managment. And it's representative of African American, or other black ethnic cultures which should be respected and not put down. A person can appreciate their own ethnic heritage in whichever ways they want and be a professional business person as well. If employers are not able to look past this, they do not have very good priorities. It's not very much different than turbans, hijabs, skullcaps, yarmulkes or any other ethnic hairstyles.

Sweetheart you've got a perfect right to be whoever you want to be. Wear your hair any damn way you please. People who complain about your braids are revealing their own ignorance and bigotry. Ignore them. The best way to love your life is to become what you were always meant to be.

Her braids are pretty by the way... but some companies believe that the style is a "fad" and braids along with dredlocks, and other African styles, do not fit into company policy. Braids are seen as "unprofessional". Some companies believe that hair style should be done to fit their standards (straight hair) which is actually a more European look. There was a petition going around a couple of months ago in Maryland about some of these companies agreeing to fire people with these hairstyles. It's a very big issue right now.

Well, I'm white, so no, I don't hear anybody complain if I wear my hair in braids. It seems to be the "anti-trend" these days, so around here, it is cool.

I can't imagine anybody stupid enough to complain about the hairstyle you shared in the picture. It is beautiful!

I know I wouldn't, and I don't see why they would. That would honestly just be really dumb if they did.
