I think it is getting worse!! Although the govenment may release figures showing that unemployment rates are going down. That is, they give figures for the number of people claiming job seekers allowance, what they fail to show is that the number of people claiming incapacity (disability) allowance is going up. People with no intention of working - in my opinion - instead of claiming jobseekers allowance make up illnesses in order to escape having to find a job!! It is not difficult to get a sick note from a doctor saying you are suffering depression or back pain, etc and thus are unable to work. The process of claiming incapacity benefit I believe should be made more rigorous. Although it may be a pain for those who genuinally have a medical condition preventing from working, it is the only way to prevent this increasing trend!!

I haven't lived in the UK for about 8 months, so can't comment on unemployment figures, but I think perception and attitudes towards unemployment are getting worse.

I've signed on twice in my life- once for 6 weeks, once for about 8 days. The jobs I found were simple, not very challenging ones that required no formal qualifications (though I do have them). Why I could find a job in such a short space of time and the dozens of people who spent hours a day sitting around the job centre with their mates, starting fights with other groups of people (I'm not making this up- pop down to the Job Centre in Sheffield city centre and have a look) couldn't is a mystery.

It's far too easy to claim benefits in the UK. Unfortunately, this means that funds are stretched and those who genuinely need help (single parent families who need child support, people with disabilities, etc) do not get enough. I actually found that I was financially better off when I received Job Seeker's Allowance (I didn't have to pay rent or council tax, and I was given JSA on top of it) than when I found a job, but found it demoralising to be doing nothing with my days and going to sign on every week. Thankfully I now have a much better job and am doing what I want to, but I only got here because I chose not to be lazy and sit around getting money while pretending to look for a job.

It's far too easy to be lazy in the UK and sit back while the government (or tax-payer's?) money arrives in your bank account.

I know it is getting worse because I read the statistics yesterday - up from 4.5% to 5.5% since last May. The reason stated was the influx of immigrants from new EU member countries, especially Poland. Although you know and I know that most of those people are working as labourers and waiters, it is likely they are also claiming unemployment benefit and getting paid black market wages for their other work.

It's not just immigrants who are part of the black market economy in the UK. The government really needs to crack down on this, but this government is a failure in pretty much every other area so I don't expect anything to happen.
