For metal, try the metallic sound of Ibanez, and get something with soapbar pickups.

Alright, none of these people are helping you. Trust me on this.... If you are looking to play heavy metal and rock, don't get a Fender Precision Bass. However, you are perfect in the price range in which you are looking. Here's the deal... If you buy a bass that is middle range (within the $600 that you're looking to spend) go with a Schector or something of that matter. Fender is not meant for metal. Plus, if you decide you don't like it, you can re-sell the bass for almost the amount you payed for it. The guy at the top is right... go to Guitar Center. Go there and try out everything and decide what sounds good to you! That's what it's all about. There's infinitive sounds in the world, and if you are playing a tone that you don't like, it's not worth playing because you'll be disgusted the entire time and give up quickly.

Recap: 1. The price range of $600 is perfect for someone who is compelled to play.
2. Don't go with Fender for metel and hard rock.
3. Find something that fits you!

Yes. The Squire bass is not bad. You could also go with a cheaper Fender bass like the stratocaster or even the Gibson knock off Epiphone. They are well made.
