Follow these directions:
Click on Start button > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.
When the window opens, click on your hard drive at the top and click Defragment. This will optimize the files on your hard drive so that the access time for the hard drive and files on it will become more consistent and faster.

Piece of cake.
click Start
Programs
Accessories
System Tools
click Disk Defragmenter
Click the "show details" button and sit back and watch the fun.
From System Tools, you should be running Disk Cleanup, Scandisk and defrag about every two weeks. If this is the first time you have run defrag, you will find the next time to be much faster.
When you are ready to run Scandisk, you may find it better to run it in Safe Mode so it is not constantly stopped by your screensaver or antivirus program.
If you are not familiar with Safe Mode:
Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5.
Click Start, Programs, run your AV program, install, uninstall, whatever.
When it is finished, Restart.
You will probably find your icons messed up. Just drag them back into place.
