When you reformat your harddrive you are removing everything on it...clean slate. You must then reload all programs and systems back on. ...and yes the virus may still be on your PC. Once you get it back up and running I suggest dancing the Tango.. go to www.asknick.com and look for dancing the tango. follow the instructions to the tee and do not do out of order. This will keep your machine running free from viruses and also you should run spy removal programs at least once a week to keep it running clean.

Whoa! This happened to me some years ago. I had Windows but the virus wouldn't let it run. Let's try this first:

Try getting rid of the virus in Safe Mode. Windows will not be loaded and hopefully your AV program will catch any self-executable files.

Safe Mode is:

Turn your PC on or Restart. As soon as you see the black and white screen, press and hold the F8 key. Continue holding until you see a black and white menu. Safe Mode is F3 or F5.

Click Start, Programs, run your AV program.
When it is finished, Restart.
You will probably find your icons messed up. Just drag them back into place.

Is Windows o.k. now?
If not, try a repair -- you didn't say what version Windows you are working with, so take your pick.

If this fails, I think you will have to go for a complete format and reinstall.

You might have not got rid of virus but windows definately.
Reinstalling wont solve rebooting. if the virus is boot sector then it will always creep in even when installing new copy of window.

Solution: use "hiren" boot cd with latest AV/Spyware updated.

It means that you have no operating system on your hard drive. It is clean. That reformat wiped your hard drive. You can reinstall Windows from there. Just make sure that you delete the old partition and remake a new one just in case (so you won't have any problems).
