I see time and again how cuts are being made in education. PLUS the NCLB act has bascally ruined the edcuation system.
Teachers bring alot of work home. (unpaid)
The plus side is they get alot of vacation.
So , when weighing both sides...teachers,, would really like to see you son, daughter, sister, brother, mother, father, aunt, uncle, cousin, niece , or nephew go to college for four years and work in the field of Public Education?

had i known what i do now, i would have never went into teaching. underpaid, tons of work and no appreciation. when students are low, it's the teachers fault. waitresses get paid more than i do. if they still want to do it, they will need that second income.

I would recommend another profession unless they truly have a strong commitment. The pay is low until at least half way through your career. There is no respect for the profession anymore. Stress is very high, and the so called vacation doesn't exist. I write curriculum, attend conferences, and prepare for the fall for NO pay. I try to pick up minimum wage jobs in the summer.
On the upside, most kids are great to work with. They motivate me every day, and I enjoy getting to know them and watching them learn.
Only a few can really make a long day for you. There is no support from parents, and they actually defend their children when they don't do homework, perform poorly on tests, etc.---always an excuse. Then they want to know if I give extra credit.
So I would say no...it takes a lot of energy for teaching.

Absolutely not. I went into the teaching profession because, to use an old cliché, I wanted to make a difference. I now realize I was very naive. Education has become highly politicized and teachers have become the scapegoats for everything that is wrong in society.

Honestly, I would say (as a teacher for the last decade), "Yes" *if and only if* they have a passion for teaching. Being a teacher is not something to do because you want to make lots of money, or become famous, or be adored by everyone... But then, neither is retail.
He or she really needs to decide what it is that they want in life: What are their goals. If they enjoy teaching because they enjoy bringing understanding to those who don't yet have it, and they don't mind not becoming rich (which is actually not all it's cracked up to be), then yes: Become a teacher.
To be a teacher is to touch a life forever.

Absolutely not. I won't allow my children to become teachers.
The lawyers have made it so that we can no longer teach. The parents defend their kids' every action. I teach at a "good school" and I'm beginning to see this.
It is a MYTH that teachers get summer vacation. If you are a teacher, you are either taking classes during the summer to keep your certification (that YOU have to pay for out of pocket) or you are working summer jobs (PLURAL....summer JOBS) to make enough money to make ends meet. Teachers DO NOT get summers off. They just don't teach during the summer.

Are you in the States? If so, i understand your worry, as they are very underpaid. I'm going to school to become a high school teacher, but i'm in canada, my boyfriend, and both of his parents are teachers, so i might be a little bit biased! However, teachers are teachers because they want to teach, not because of the money or the holidays. If someone is interested in it because of that, then by all means, do what you love
