i need to check out a drum set but dont know what to check for when buying a drum set.

I've been playing drums for over 17 years. The thing about drums is, you have to learn about the tones of the woods. Each type of wood has it's own sound. The warmth, the punch, the aesthetic appeal. Try out every drumset and find one that sounds good to you. You can tune a drum to any key, but you can't create a tone that isn't possible with a certain grain. Go to a local shop: Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc. and try out all the drums. Find what suits your ear best.

Check to see if the drum shells (wooden round part) of the drums are warped. If they are don't buy the set, because it is a nightmare to fix them. Here are some good music equipment websites: www.musiciansfriend.com

spend some time in a guitar center. go there and ask and play too.
