I am 31 and a single mother of three and I am seriously thinking about going back to college. I have always had a deep desire to be a writer so I want something geared toward that but of course something I can use on a job. What major could that be? Is there a demand for creative professions? Something that would also be useful toward creative writing though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

english, journalism.
some schools offer a subplan of creative writing for english majors.
For most jobs, it isn't about what the major is, but the fact that you graduated with a degree.

Follow this link http://www.knox.edu/x1564.xml. It has some wonderful ideas for creative writing careers. A small excerpt:

"Creative writing students who develop their skills of analysis and expression are well prepared for a wide variety of careers. The core elements of a major in Creative Writing—editing and writing, interpretation and analysis, the ability to look at the world from different perspectives, the ability to articulate feelings and ideas clearly and forcefully—are valuable in every profession.

Some Creative Writing majors, before embarking on their formal careers, have participated in such programs as Teach for America, The Peace Corps, Americorps, and the Jet Program. Creative Writing majors have also pursued career paths in fields including publishing, advertising, law, journalism, and academia."

The opportunities are not only interesting, varied, and multiple, but they pay well (important for a single mother of 3).

Good luck and remember that either you will or you won't, but the time will pass. Hopefully, you will find yourself in a profession as well as being the mother of 3.

Marketing / Advertising with a Journalism minor. The former will pay the bills, the latter will free your soul.

It talks about training needed, nature of the work, likely pay, whether the career needs few or many new people over the next 5 years, etc.
