I think it's a personal choice and I don't look down upon or judge others for still being closeted, but I was wondering what reasons people have for making the choice not to come out.

Read all the crap on this site and you’ll soon see why some gays don’t want to be open about their sexuality.

As evidenced above, there are people openly hostile to the gay community. In some areas, it is literally dangerous to be known as gay. In others, it is a social burden to bear, one that can make life much more miserable than hiding a secret of that magnitude.

The fact is, many people do judge others. Even in more liberal areas, there are still some people uncomfortable enough with gays to at least say so. Sometimes, a person is closeted because they must be. Sometimes, they are because it is better for them to be, even if they could stand to come out. Then again, at times, they may be hiding from themselves, afraid of who they are.

In the end, there are multitudes of reasons. It's tough to be different.

For the adults who are still closeted, I wish I could convince them to move to better areas. (since bigotry seems to be the biggest obstacle). All the best cities have large GLBT populations and a tolerant atmosphere.

I'm "out" at college and on the internet. But I'm still closeted elsewhere because I'm currently living with people whose opinion of homosexuals is rather negative.

well look at how much people hate, we can't change the points of view for everyone. but if we try to and show people that we're not scared then life would be a little easier and better. All we can have is hope, hope thats things will change to make life easier. Look at the positives, it makes life a little interesting....

Read the answers you will get and those to other questions. Then, look at some of the questions posted on here, and you will have part of your answer. As to the rest, personal opinions and preferences. I for one will never go back in there, I am claustraphobic.

There's a big list, but to keep it short, here:
- Fear of rejection from family and/or friends, which could lead to ruin many bonds.
- Fear of the social look, and giving in to the social pressure, the desire to be like most of your peers.
- Religious beliefs, and moral system.
- Bigots and fear of hate crimes (Read the 2nd answer!)

Karl Rove, G.W. and the Bible Belt. I know there's a lot of other reasons as well, but I don't have all day to list them.
