Are you looking for the aquarium fish called a "moon"? Most folks know these better as a platy.

Scientific Name: Branchiostegus wardi
Location: Port Stephens, NSW to Noosa, QLD
Season: All year round
Size: To about 45cm

Taste, Texture White flesh, fine texture, Average rating.

Information:

Also known as Ward's Horsehead and Tile Fish.

The Moon Fish has a reddish body with mauve tonings, golden yellow fins and a snout the shape of a horsehead. The caudal fin is straight and has a dark blotch on the lower half.

It is a white fleshed fish and the texture is fine. It is not rated highly as a table fish.

The Moon Fish is found in deep water on sand, mud and gravel bottoms from Port Stephens in NSW to Noosa in Queensland. It reaches a length of about 45cm
