Good question! The money that goes into a wishing well or fountain is usually given to charity, government, or the place that owns it.

The pennies are kept by the person who owns the well, unless it has listed on it a notice of a particular charity (as some municipalities demand that this money go to charity rather than the building owners.) This can be a lot of money. You often see nickels, dimes and quarters in there from people who didn't have a penny or just grabbed the first coin in their pocket. A non-profit in my area receives a regular donation from the fountains at the local mall. The mall donates to several charities, but the one I work with receives about $20,000 per year from coins and wishes.

Leave the pennies in the wishing well.

At one time, all the pennies went straight into my brother's sister-in-law's pockets round midnight. But the slag drowned one night, so the money goes to the proper charity these days.

It depends where it is.

If it's in a shopping mall or some sort of place like that they tend to give it to charity.

If it's in a church yard it goes to the restoration of the grounds.

If it's in the middle of nowhere i think the tooth fairy gets it.
(how else do you think she finds that money for all those gnashers?)
