I want to hire someone to clean my house twice a month, but my husband doesn't trust anyone coming in. Any experiences with breaking things, theft, etc.?Any recommendations on a reputable company?

Bonded, insured, check with Better Business Bureau, check references (!!) but most of all, lock up valuables! That way if something is missing, you'll know someone went the extra effort to take it. Never tempt the weak. This applies to house cleaners, carpet cleaners, home repair people as well as friends over for a party.

As far a breakage, they are insured. If you have Ming pottery or other such irreplaceable, I assume you already have a rider on your insurance policy.

If hubby is really against it, what is he hiding? Then again, he may simply not want someone in your house.

I would never hire a friend. If anything were to be misplaced, the friendship would be out the window because I'd always wonder if they took it.

Yes. I certainly do. References and a good interview make a difference.

I hate to say this but being bonded and insured really means nothing other than if something is taken or missing, the company is liable to replace it. There are people who have committed crimes who still get bonded; it depends upon whether the insurance company wants to take a chance on them. But it has happened. Most decent people would replace anything they break or otherwise ruin should they choose the wrong cleaner or something.

If you go through a service, they are responsible for any thefts. I've tried Merry Maids in the U.S. and they were okay. Put anything valuable out of sight when having your home cleaned.

I trust mine implicitly because it's me.

For outside help, insist that the company be bonded and insured.

I clean my own. If I were you I would find a friend or a friend of a friend that you trust.
