Sometimes I have the tendency to refer to women as "chicks"... The other day I said this in front of a woman, and she was really offended... Why would this be so degrading?

The only time I will refer to a woman as a "chick" is in an informal context. By no means am I a sexist man!

Because women are not barnyard animals. Just a thought.

It is casual terminology, although the use of such in a degrading manner can drag the word down. As well, the word can be associated with guys who don't have the highest regard for women at times.

I'm sure you meant no harm, but some women are more sensitive to things than others. I chalk it up to some people being too easily offended, and a word that different people interpret in different ways.

I probably wouldn't have a problem with it but it does depend on the context and the tone of voice. Maybe she thought you were trying to put her down by something you said? Or she might just be a radical.

Because it sounds macho and disrespectful like the terms babe, doll and dame.

She is being silly.

But it's probably best to use the term "babes" instead.
