Anything by HP Lovecraft is good. However, most of his books are actually collections of short stories.

I additionally like Stephen King and Clive Barker. Koontz has gotten faraway from horror yet a number of his till now works have been certainly spooky. It by utilising King became very tough as became The Stand and Salem's Lot. Barker's Weaveworld and Imajica have been way available yet impressive. King's Son Joe Hill has written some Ghost thoughts that are impressive. the midsection shaped field will scare the pants off ya.

Warday by Whitley Streiber and James Kunetka. Takes place 5 years after a very limited nuclear war. The setting for the war is kind of dated (1980s US vs. Soviets) but the aftermath of a limited (only a few nukes exchanged) war was pretty believeable and horrifying. Nothing supernatural about it. In it, the authors are "characters" travelling around the US and interviewing people about the aftermath of the war. I read it probably 15 years ago but it still stands out in my mind as memorable.

Depends on what you mean by horror. Blood and gore horror, or mind bending psychological horror? One of the best of the latter is Shirley Jacksons, haunting of hill house. There have been many bad movies made about it, but it's a great book. Theres also a great book by Dan Simmons called Summer of Night that was good, plays on fears of childhood.

If you want a book that is true but scary or just down right chilling. Anything by Anne Rice. She knows how to put a true story to paper. Give her a try. If you want to try R. L. Stine has some very weird books also.

The Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal, Hannibal Rising, etc, all by Thomas Harris, are classic horror thrillers. They were all made into movies, I think, but the books are supposed to be terrific, and terrifying.

Try Ghosts by Noel Hynd. Scared me so bad, I dreamt about it and woke up screaming! Had to peel my husband off the ceiling! lol. I thought Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill was pretty good too. Left me a little creeped out and that doesn't happen easily.

Bear in mind most horror is supernatural or has an element of fantasy- that is what makes it horror.
Non-fictional horror; Helter Skelter.

I am Legend. Couldn't really happen, but it's kind of not supernatural and it's really good.
