It's not great for your carpet either - you'll see why when you rip it out.

If you have a fancy vacuum with removable filters, they will clog quickly. And the clogged filter can damagae your vacuum. IYou have to remember to either change or wash your filter more frequently. And if you don't have a fancy high powered vacuum, you are probably not removing all the baking soda from the carpet - which can damage the carpet but your vacuum will be fine.

It helps keep the floor fresh smelling, but I don't think it is bad for your vacuum. If your vacuum messes up when you use the powder, clean it and if it still messes up, it probably is the powder. It could be the brand or your carpet itself. I would suggest not to use the baking powder because it can really mess up your carpet. Try buying some carpet freshener and smell-good powder. That works best.

I have read in many different magazines that baking soda can be sprinkled on carpets before vacuuming. I use on my carpets often and my vacuum still works fine.

It never affected my vacuum. Powder carpet cleaners are basically baking soda with a scent added.

Baking soda will clog the sweeper. If you really need to freshen your carpet, they sell deodorizers for that specific purpose. The difference is the finer the deodorizer, the better it is. If something needs to be used that often, I would buy a Hoover upright shampooer.
