Where did this saying come from [ I will pay you under the table] & how much security is there in that situation. Thanks.

there is no security in being paid cash. Here is why. You have no benefits, you are commiting tax evaision, and there is no record that you work there. If you get hurt, you are on your own and out of luck. If you are fired or a victim of discrimination or harassment, too bad. If you get stiffed, to bad. The fact is the only people who work under the table are usually dishonest to more than one degree. For example collecting welfare and working. I am an operations manager and would never take on the liability of having this type of worker. They can not be trusted becuase it is dishonest from the start. Please do not join the ranks of the less desireable. By the way, the saying came from passing money under the table so the tax man would not see.

If you are getting paid 'under the table' then you have no legal recourse if you are fired, harassed, or if the boss just decides not to pay you - you are not legally an employee of the company. You also won't be able to claim unemployment, or disability if you get injured while on the job. You most likely won't get health insurance or other benefits either.

I'm not sure how the phrase originated, but it if you are paid 'under the table' it means it the transaction is secret, not in public view - it's the same thing as being paid 'off the books," which means, not recorded in the official financial records of a business; - usually used describing payments made in cash to fraudulently avoid payment of taxes or of employment benefits
