It is a form of respect to call the oldest brother or sister by this name. Chan after a name, just means affection or dear.

Since you are Daniel, we would call you Daniel-Chan.

I am the number one daughter and eldest sibling so my Mom gave me the nickname of Obi Tamago, or her first and biggest egg. I know it sounds weird, but all of this shows love and respect within the family.

When my Mom became a Grandmother we quit calling her Mom because to her Grandmother was a more revered title and conferred age and wisdom which is so valued in Japanese culture. I hope this helps you. I watch all the Japanese films that I can and family drama is great too, LOL.

because it's disrespectful. you have to be older than someone to be able to call them by their first name. same with a lot of asian cultures.
