There has been alot of talk about Quebec wanting to become a country, Montreal is in Quebec, but montreals Hockey team is the ''Canadiens''...No I didnt mispell Canadians, thats how you spell it. So if Quebec, along with montreal, separates from the rest of Canada, will Montreals hockey team still be Canadiens?

I think its a very good question...possibly the smartest I have ever asked.

Its like if Washington would cease to be the capital or would become a country in its own, would the team still be Capitols?

Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is a separatist in Quebec.

The issue of separation has been put on the backburner since our Quebec Election on Monday showed that other issues are more pressing, like quality health care, taxes, and public safety regarding our deteriorating infrastructure. The separatist Parti Quebecois are relegated to being the third party in the national assembly, with only 36 out of 125 seats.

As for the Canadiens de Montreal, the name is a registered trademark and I doubt because of its history that they would change that. The question is actually whether the team would be able to survive a separation in Quebec and pay the salaries using a "Quebec dollar" which would likely drop in value due to uncertainty. George Gillett is a businessman, and if he starts losing a lot of money, odds are that team would suddenly become an expansion team in Hartford, Las Vegas, or some other US city. It happened with the Nordiques (Quebec) so it would not be the first Quebec team that went south of the border.

Besides, everyone in Montreal refers to the Montreal team as the "Habs", which is short for "Habitants". Nothing to stop them from just renaming the team "Montreal Habitants"

The ghosts of the forum are gone and they have not won a stanley cup since they moved to the new often renamed centre. The media through the years has become a bigger opponent for them than the teams they are playing against. The team is now owned by an american. The one thing that makes them the icon that they are is the trademarked name the montreal canadiens. Nothing, and I really mean nothing, will make them change their name. If they do, they will no longer be the franchise that made them great in the first place. Even the fans going to the games and rooting for them aren't the same.

Why would they change the name. They've had that name for 97 years, they've gotten thru 2 referendums 1980 and 1995, General De Gaulle yelling "Vive le Quebec Libre" in 1967. They're a city icon!

As for the comment of everyone who lives in Quebec is a separatist, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. The 95 referendum came out 51% against, 49% for. So get your facts straight.

I doubt Quebec would ever become a separate country but even if they did, the ones that want to separate wish to keep some ties to Canada, like using Canadian money, if they tried to move the "Habs" out of the province or change the name, there would be riots. Heck there was a riot in the 1950's when Rocket Richard got banned from a game. They take hockey very seriously in Quebec.

Even in the event that Quebec became a country unto its own, I doubt very much that the Habs would even consider changing their name. There is too much great history associated with "Montreal Canadiens" to change it even if the province became a country.

Besides if a team of much lesser success like the Jazz can be associated with a conservative state like Utah, then we are almost guaranteed that Les Habitants is a permanent name. I think they would rather be dissolved before changing their name.

Ya Quebec has wanted to seperate since the 70's - don't think it will happen, but if it would - the name would remain the same. The team has too much history - would be weird to have a different name.

well the official name of the Montreal Canadiens is Le Club de Hockey Canadiens. and i believe they would keep the name as its older then the NHL its self. Montreal Canadiens founded 1909 NHL founded 1917. i don't think they would change it cause there's to much history around this team.

GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

No way they would change.

The people of Quebec would still be Canadian even if they did seperate. Just like everyone in North and South America are technically "americans", which is why there is no such thing as the American Ambassador to Russia, he has to be called the United States Ambassador.

that is a really good question. I was gonna say they would go back to being the habs..but the Canadians have such a huge history. Their logo has always been with the C, and pretty much everything they did was as montreal canadians. Changing that, would be like making humans breathe in water. Just weird.

Silly, they will just change their names to the Nordiques and be done with it.

Actually if the Quebec movement ever actually took place, I bet they would insist on retaining the name Canada and make the rest of the country change their name to something else just so they wouldn't have to muck around with the Habs history.
