because they could be very tight so when the car is on the floor you get resistance when you are loosening the nuts you risk tiping the car of your jack if you try loosening when it is up, however you can still do it the wheel wont spin aslong as the car is in gear and handbrake is on

you have better leverage and the tire wont turn if the wheel is on the ground, gives you a better chance to loosen the lugs. Also if it is on the jack the movement of trying to loosen the lug nuts may cause the jack to rock causing it to break free causing the car to come down

Lug nuts are usually on pretty tight, and when the wheel is on the ground it can't spin, therefore making it easier to loosen the tight lug nuts.

If your using an impact it doesn't really matter... but if your using a standard tire tool or breakover it is easier and safer that way.

Just don't loosen them too much, just break them loose, jack it up, and finish taking them off.

so the tires don't spin or if you set the brake and have to get a super tight one loose you don't rock it off the jack. remember safety
