When I was younger I had a radio that picked up SW MW and VHF.
Now can anyone advise what difference this has made to todays radio?

Was the change from VHF to FM to give better sound quality?

Thank you

Nothing has changed. Those are just the names given to 3 different portions of the radio spectrum. FM is where you find your FM music stations. VHF is a higher frequency range where you might have heard some police and fire communications as well as the national weather service and other things. SW stands for shortwave and is a lower set of frequencies that tend to carry broadcasts a greater distance and where you can hear broadcasts from around the world.
