Seriously, I think it's the condition in the villages.Education is vital. We need to get those ppl into better lives pronto. Additionally, cities need to be cleaned up. I understand that industry will be affected, but nobody wants to bathe in the Ganga any more.
And politics in India is pretty dirty.

I would think that the most important issue facing India today would be modernization. You have the modern cities, then there are fields that look more third-world than 21st century. This gap between rich and poor, city and country needs to be closed before the nation can truly move on.

I think sustainable growth and keeping the economy from overheating is a big issue for the Indian government, but the most important is spreading prosperity to rural areas and reducing poverty where it is most acute.

I believe that it is educating it's lower caste children. Since education is not guaranteed, it is imperative that all the children get educated and thus be given a chance to escape the lot they were born into.
