Who still thinks that people living on the Hawaiian Islands live in grass shacks and wear grass skirts with coconut bras? I hear all these stories that people ask Hawaiians if they have electricity or internet and cars. I hear outrageous questions like "Does pineapple juice really come out of your water system" or "Did you really paddle your canoe all the way here?" I just want to know who are these people and about those real experiences or encounters others had. Mahalo!

I forgot to mention that I am a Hawaiian and grew up on 'Oahu. I go to college on the mainland and hear all these sorts of nonsense from family and friends. We do have internet, cars, electricity. No we do not paddle our canoe to the mainland, we do not always wear grass skirts, and we do not have pineapple juice as our water system. Yes, hula dancers do wear grass skirts and coconut bras sometimes but not all the time. I know more and more people are visiting the Hawaiian islands and I wonder if there are still people who don't know that Hawai'i has grown so much. Oh yea, Hawai'i became the 50th state in 1959.

Haole means "no breath". Ancient Hawaiians used to rub noses to greet one another. When foreigners arrived, they did not greet that same way and therefor was given that name. Haole does not only derive from your ethnicity. I know people who have very little Hawaiian blood but have more pride than some who have more Hawaiian. It does not matter how much Hawaiian blood you have to know you are Hawaiian.

something bob hates is when people think pineapple is like our state fruit and **** like that, when hawaiians didnt even bring the pineapple to hawaii, the spanish introduced it to hawaii in the 1800's and white man came and made big commerical plantation. Plus bob dont like that they call pizza with ham and pineapple, hawaiian pizza.

Sure there are people who think that. Hawaii is very far away and remote from the continental U.S. It was named a state not too long ago compared to the rest of our states. That is why people probably think that. Also, some Hawaiians have a real segregationist attitude in thinking that Hawaii was taken over by the haoles (anyone NOT Hawaiian). At the same time, they want to have all the comforts of modern technology and the money that the tourists bring. Also, anyone in Hawaii who is brown skinned thinks they are a Hawaiian even though there are only about like 2% Pure Hawaiians left. If you are 99% Filopeno, Chinese, Japanese, Samoan, Tahitian etc... and your ancestors moved to Hawaii that does not make you a Hawaiian. It makes you Haole.

Sounds like good jokes to me. The Hawaiian grass skirt icon can be found in tourist attractions...loved the place because you could get rice with your egg breakfast...nice people, no pineapple juice in the water system, how silly.

Coconut bras--- ouch!!!
I find the most common misconception is that Hawaii is not part of the US (50th State, folks!) Questions like, how many stamps should I put on a letter to the US-- etc.
