I have neighbours who were born in UK but their families are from China and Malaysia....I'm just curious..is there any other asian country call their brothers and sisters not by their name...for example...my neighbour from China call his older brother as "Tai Ke" or something similiar...and neighbour from Malaysia call their older sister as "Khaka"....why can't they just call them by their name like we do....Is there any other country have a similiar culture in calling their siblings.

Asian families are very tight-knit. Names are usually reserved for situations outside the family. Inside the family, it's actually more informal and friendlier to use "tai ke". The American equivalent is how we use special nicknames or shortened names for our kids - for instance, William might be Billy; Jessica might be Jess; Timothy James might be T.J., Claire might become "Claire-bear", etc.

i'm Vietnamese. there's a asserting in my language to tutor that the guy you're relating is older than you. as an occasion, I truly have an older sister. I say 'chi' before I say her call. In some Asian cultures, in simple terms asserting the names of your siblings who're older than you would be rude.

i call my brother and my cousins on first name bases, sometimes brother.. its definitely not respect in my case cuz we are more like rivals.. hehe.. typical brother and sister... but that could be due to the fact i grew up here..

Maybe it hasn't occurred to you that maybe it is their name. Every culture is
different and should be respected for the differences. We have friends from all

Im goin to visit a friend in Thailand and I keep asking what is your mum and dad's name so I can call them by name. She said I don't call them by name, I actually am supposed to call them "mum and dad" also even though they ain't my rents.
