Lol.
When that happens (not unlike historical protestant/catholic fights of the past), they usual get around it by claiming the enemies are not muslims.

Well, the only place that is evident where Sunni and Shia are killing eachother is Iraq. There is a couple of reasons:
1.) The Iraqi govt. was headed by a sunni who killed many shias and oppressed them, so most shias in Iraq now believe Sunnis are the enemies, when it was just Saddam.
2.) The country is at war and each side blames the other so the only justification and resolution possible is to kill the people from the other group.
3.) Shias are Muslim yes, but they have deviated from the original Islamic past (original Islam is followed by sunnis) and degraded the prophet muhammad by assuming the Ayatollas of today are more sacred than he is, therefore there are many differences in these two branches of Islam, causing more feuds.
So, in conclusion, sunnis and shias are all muslims, but beliefs differ greatly, and only in Iraq they kill eachother due to saddam's atrocious reign.

"Like dogs?" Definitely one of the most absurd comparisions I have ever come across, since dogs are not particularly famous for killing each other. I think you tend to imply "like barbarians" or "like animals."
However, all of these phrases are disrespectful to both parties, and it would have been a little more polite if they were not used. Politeness is a factor taught by all religions, let it be Hinduism or any other.
The Sunnis and Shiites that kill each other do it so they believe that the opposite sect or at least the individual / faction they are targetting is out of the fold of Islam. No Muslim believes that another Muslim can be killed, neither Shiite or Sunni. It is because of the thinking that another person is not a Muslim anymore, and that his religion is different now, that leads to violence and deaths.
Of course, difference of religion has unfortunately led to many wars and battles throughout centuries; not only between Islam and other religions, but also between two other religions. Such as Hitler's mass-murder of the followers of Judaism, due to his sadistic christianized ideologies and the retaliation of the Jewish.
In short, the Shiite-Sunni fighting can not be taken as a weak link to the concept of Muslim brotherhood, as the ideology here is killing someone who is not a Muslim anymore, not killing Muslim brothers in faith. Therefore, your analogy is invalid.
Who is correct? That is unrelated to this question.

They believe in different interpretations of Islam. This causes a great deal of tension between the two groups. If you are specifically talking about Iraq, there are also historical and political forces at work as well. Saddam Hussein, a Sunni, controlled a government that brutally oppressed the Shiite majority. There has been this type of oppression between Shiites and Sunnis for centuries. The conflict in Iraq is not a new conflict, rather just another chapter in one that has been going on for centuries.

Because the divisions in Islam came about after Muhammad died. They both have different ideas on how Islam should run and which family should be in charge.
Kind of like the divisions in Christianity, except they happened much sooner and have not been settled peacefully yet.

This conflict is no different then that happened in India, between Maharashtra and Gujarati,(I am talking about riots in Ahmadabad and riots in Bombay), same happened in other parts of India between Hindus and Hindus. Ireland was no different(Christen Vs Christen), there are many situations in the past that are very similar to these from time to time and all over the world.
This is mainly because.
It is the power hungry leaders(any and all nations and religion) that upset the peace and take advantage of uninformed / ill informed young and old and in between people of all ages, by misdirecting and misguiding them, most religions forbids suicide.
And yet!

Because they have different beliefs even though they are Muslim. It's been that way for centuries.
Humm. You say "Islam is a 'farce'?
No more than Christianity. In fact, I would offer that both religions are questionable.
More like a 'farce' fornicating with a 'fiasco'
