Hiccup basics:
When you breath, eat or swallow, you can do it kinda half way (like when you are scarfing food or swallow carbonated drinks the bubbles can get in the way) All those things can cause this valve in your throat not to close all the way on that swallow, and will cause a hiccup! They keep happening because the valve get stuck in that rhythem of going and keep half-closing . (thats probably why people say for someone to scare you so you can breathe in hard an suddenly and throw the hiccups off and back on your regular pattern. I know I didn't use fancy words, but this is how my science teacher once explained it to me.

Hiccups are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. As the muscle contracts repeatedly, the opening between your vocal cords snaps shut to check the inflow of air and makes the hiccup sound. Irritation of the nerves that extend from the neck to the chest can cause hiccups.

hiccups r caused by a spasm of the diaphram (the muscle under the lungs/lung muscle)...... i get rid of them by drinking water when i feel a hiccup coming.....
