Summertime in the Adirondack Mountains. Lake George, NY has a nice amusement park called The Great Escape. (Darien Lake Amusement Park has closed.) Niagara Falls should be a must see. New York City has got to be seen, Broadway,Times Square, etc...New York in the summertime, you have to see a Yankees or Mets game. Buffalo has a real nice ballpark which hosts the Bisons baseball team, stop at The Anchor Bar after the game, the home of the famous chicken wing,(I dare you to try the "suicides") While in the Adirondacks try to get up to Lake Placid a must see. But again, it's a huge place, alot of State to see, you'll need lots of time to appreciate it all.

I'll admit I've only ever been to Manhattan, but it's one spectacular island.
Go to the top of the Empire State Building, see Central Park, the Metropolitain Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, take in Times Square and a Broadway show, see the Statue of Liberty-- and a bajillion other things.
Also if you're looking for a place to stay with a great location try the Golden Apple Hostel. Just a half block away from Times Square.
Have fun.

I guess it depends on WHERE in NYS you are going. There's always something to do every time of year but the summer and fall are best for traveling. Niagara Falls on the west side of the state. NY City/Manhattan on the South. Those two are no-brainers but for more relaxed fun, try the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes or Wine Country. How about the 1000 Islands? The boat tour is wonderful in the summer and fall. Is your time in New York State for adults or children? Or both? Order a New York State Vacation Guide. Check out iloveny.com

Are you visiting NY State or NY City? They are two totally different things to see.
I grew up outside NY City, so there's a lot to see... shows, museums, and all that. There's great shopping in NY City, but if you want Tax Free on clothes, you'll have to venture to the Malls of New Jersey.
My husband is from Buffalo, and we've seen a lot of great museums, sports and amusement parks (Darien Lake is in NY and Marine World is across the border in Niagara Falls, Canada).

The State of New York covers a lot of territory. Why not start small and visit Rhode Island?

Just so you know, NY state is quite big. Its a 7 or 8 hour drive from Buffalo to NYC. What part of the state are you going to? It would help to know this...
