To me, a hero is somebody who has the compassion and the courage to put the needs of others ahead of his own. It's also someone who has the conviction to stand up for what is right, but at the same time has the kind of humility it takes to admit when he is wrong.

And I realize that those last two traits are almost mutually-exclusive, since "conviction" is pretty-much synonymous with "stubbornness," but I've seen it done believably in comics (particularly in Spider-Man).

Also, heroes don't have to be perfect. My favorite hero of all time, Daredevil, has been growing progressively more insane over the last several years (for good reason). But he still cares deeply about the people of the city, even more so than he did before, so the emotional turbulance and fractured psyche actually seem to make him *more* heroic now than he was before. Because he has every excuse to throw a massive pity party for himself, but instead, he focusses on making life better for everybody *else*.

i think to be a hero means a person(doesn't have to have super powers) who will put their life on the line to protect others. Someone whose brave and doesn't give up or back down, true courage from within. that's a true heroe to me.
