I'm 16 and I just joined a death metal band as the lead vocalist. I read in various places that vocal cords can be very easily damaged from screaming if technique is not proper. My first question is, what is proper technique? I know you have to "push with your diaphragm", or something like that, but how do you tell if you're doing it correctly? And second, is there anything extra I can do to protect my voice?

You may want to get a vocal coach. I'd suggest you buy a copy of "The Zen of Screaming" DVD. What you're going to need to do is a technique known as vocal fry. I'd also suggest reading books on vocal technique. Nothing substitutes for having a vocal coach to tell you where you're going wrong. Posture can make a difference. Smoking can kill your ability, even in death metal.

the best bet would be to get advice from someone you can meet and conversate with. there is a "safe" way to scream like that. certain people can teach you to do it.
