No one knows that, most people believe his girlfriend killed him. Or someone broke into his house and did that.
I don't believe he killed himself though.

I'm sry to say that the people who look up information on Wikipedia is completely biased! People can changed what happened and dates and famous people into non existant things. If you by any chance got this information on Wikipedia then I'm sry to tell u that it's not true. Everyone is right. Elliot Smith did not kill himself. Hope that answers your question!

Jennifer Chiba is a musician, known for being the girlfriend of singer-songwriter Elliott Smith at the time of his death. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office's investigation into Smith's death remains technically open, although it has not been active for several years and will likely remain this way indefinitely. Due largely to the case's inconclusive nature, speculation has arisen, particularly amongst some of Smith's fans, that Chiba may have been somehow involved in his death.

Elliott was sober. The medical examiner stated that. Plus he had two defensive wounds to his arm. Nobody sober stabs themselves over and over. I was depressed, did drugs, suicidal, etc, and had a boyfriend nearly kill me. If he had succeded, im sure he would have convinced people that i did it to myself and got away with it. This ***** got away with murder because she is a women and people had preconceived ideas about Eliott Smith. I have worked with the police and I know they are so overworked that they try and wrap things up fast. This man was murdered.

I heard talk that he had always been battling depression and that before he died he had a fight......and that he had left a note but I can't remember if it was found fraud or not. That's all I got

He battled drug and alcohol addiction throughout his career. This NEVER mixes well with depression.
