Scores given to various items, products, works of art like movies or books. Ratings have to have a legenda with them, and most of the time, it's a very subjective and personal rating, objective and neutral ratings usually don't exist, since some people hate something and love something else, which alters their score, even if it's not done consciously, it will be done unconsciously. Everybody has a different taste...

when u rate something u give like a grade to something like lets say the movie got an A in the rating well thats rating or if its rated R it is only for people over 17

It's a way to score things - i.e. to determine how good/bad or what something is like such a TV show, or a movie (however, in the case of movies it's given a rating like G, R, PG, etc.) make sense?

ratings are a score you get for how go you answer the question on yahoo. But if you mean in reaL LIFE IT IS A SCORE YOU GET FOR DOING SOMETHING, TO SHOW HOW GOOD YOU DID IT.
