We have a male chin (4-5 months old) and we rescued a female chin (aprox. 1 yr.) last night. She refuses to eat, drink or take a dust bath. We received her due to a couple getting a divorce. We know she was around children before and my children haven't realized she is there. I am quite concerned that she may be in shock. Do we need to set up a seperate dust bath for her? Will she eventually come around? Any tricks to get her to eat? We tried giving her treats, no luck.

So, its only been, what, a few hours?
Is it daylight where you are?
They are most active at night, and sleep all day. Give her a day or two to get used to the new surroundings, she'll be fine.

well, we adopted a female shen when we already had a male also, he was almost a year and she was about 6 months old.

yes, you could try giving her a private dust bath, but dont force it, she will probably be ok with some time.

here are some tips we were given to help her adjust, ours are a breeding pair, but we seperate them so they cant breed more often than once or twice a year:

take him out of the cage and put her in it, put him in a seperate cage for a few days and let her get settled in.
put the cages near each other so they can smell one another.
get them out and let them play together supervised a little each day, making it longer each day.
then after about a week of this put him back in the cage with her for a little while supervised.
then take him out, then put him back in a day or 2 and see how they react.

they will hopefully be fine with one another by then, ours were.

That is not uncommon for a chin to stress and not eat or drink. Give her time. Please keep them separated for a 30 day quarantine as each chin has their own set of bacteria that they can bring with them that can make the other sick. That way you can keep an eye out for any contagious issues that are unseen at the moment. And yes they need separate baths. Usually it's one per cage, and since you don't want any unwanted matings (this can take only seconds) to stress her out more it's best to keep them separate or get him neutered if you plan to try and bond them which may or may not happen.

Did you put her into the same cage or hutch as the existing chinchilla? Chinchillas of either sex do not mesh will with others unless they are raised together. This is especially true of females.

My suggestion to immediately move her into her own cage (if shes not in one) and provide her with her own dust and food.

Chinchillas have a keen sense of smell and the existing area she is in has already been marked by its owner. It will alos be helpful to cover her cage and provide her with quiet surroundings until she becomes comfortable and feels safe.

As you know by owning a chin previously, they can be very sensitive. Good Luck!

Yea, she's probably just stressed. Your best bet is to give her a bit of time alone to adjust, maybe a few days or so. If she still doesn't eat or drink, call the vet.

Good luck

I would try using static guard and fabric softener on your clothes. Can't hurt.
