Lord of War is the best war movie, because it deals with serious social issues in a very unconventional way that really seems to make how serious they are really be apparent.

Saving Private Ryan, Starship Troopers (1&2), Blackhawk down...so many others I can't really list them all right now.

Life Is Beautiful(American),

Das Boot (German), Uncle Kruger (German), Rome Open City (Italian), The Patriot (American), A Bridge Too Far (I guess British, but American involvement), Lawrence of Arabia, Sparticus, anything about the Alamo, anything John Wayne, anything by Fritz Lang (especially Hangmen Also Die) and maybe you could count Gone With the Wind (I know it's a romance, but..)

Other people I know like The Dirty Dozen (usual favorite of the over 30's crowd)
