I have to write a paper in my psychology class on any given disorder, as long as it can start in early childhood and possibly last thru out the life span. I want to do something interesting, that I can find information on, but not something so popular that 5 others in my class will be chosing the same topic. Any ideas?? Thanks!

Childhood Disintegrative Disorder and Rett's Disorder are 2 pervasive developmental disorders that are pretty uncommon.
Childhood disintegrative disorder is a condition occurring in 3- and 4-year-olds who have developed normally to age 2. Over several months, a child with this disorder will deteriorate in intellectual, social, and language functioning from previously normal behavior.

Rett syndrome is a neurological and developmental disorder that mostly occurs in females. Infants with Rett syndrome seem to grow and develop normally at first, but then stop developing and even lose skills and abilities.

Why not do a paper on cormorbid disorders. This refers to having a disorder or label that often coexists with another or one has a propensity to develop (later in life) as a result of having the first one. For instance, ADD in childhood is often cormorbid with conduct disorder in adolescence and antisocial personality disorder in adulthood.

It's interesting and I'm sure no one will think of it. Pick 3 examples to focus on. Added advantage is that you'll be discussing a few, so you won't have to go too in depth with each one. Depending on the length of your paper, you can limit your discussion of each to a couple issues. Maybe you want to discuss how key features of each, how one disorder can lead to the other, the etiology of both, and perhaps the treatment and prognosis.

Flip through the latest edition (I think we're on the fourth now) of the Diagnositic Statistical Manual (DSM-IV) to get some ideas.

How about attachment disorders...maybe looking at orphans from countries that just put the kids in the cribs and leave them there with very little touching/holding. These kids get adopted here in the USA and some have attachment problems due to this early lack of human contact...just a thought kinda outside the box.
