Then they progressed to washboards, which were ribbed boards, and a copper to heat water, then wrung out by hand. A real job.

People still do this in many parts of the world. Many just use soap, a bucket, and their hands or a scrub brush. Some put them in a big bucket and have a big stick and push the pile of laundry around in the water.

Before there were washing machines people used a tub of water and a washboard (see link).
Washboards are used more as musical instruments or antique objets d'arts now.

washboard and washing basin. Sometimes rocks and a river if times were really desperate. Then lay them out on the rocks to dry, or hang by a fire.

they used clothes dolly to wash clothes in a tub.
a wash board to scrub clothes.
a mangle to remove excess water.
and a clothes horse to hang wet clothes on to dry.
