I guess this is a question about prestige (or lack there of). Be honest.

Not much prestige outside of their community. But that is because most people don't understand what is involved and how much $$ is at play there. Pretend you are a used car dealer and want a web site and know zip about the whole thing. Go look for "Web Side Design" on Yahoo and see the prices. $2000 for a 5 page site, $500 a page, extra to include your pictures, more for a moving banner, extras for each link. Can run lotsa bucks. But the best example is Amazon. How on earth can they do what they do? Remember you and suggest something like what you inquired about last visit? Have megatons of inventory, mostly not their own. THAT is complex. And lotsa bucks.

But, to the guy on the street, probably not as prestigious as bartender.

Well, as another designer, I've seen so much bad work done by "professionals" that I have a negative connotation. I let their work speak for them. Show me a link, and I'll show you my awe.

But to the common person, it often implies an ability to do "amazing things" with web pages. Just don't show them how easy it actually is to do straight html.
