Hook the primary up, then lick the end of your pinkie and stick it in where a secondary plug wire goes, then crank the engine. You should feel "just ever so slight of a tingling sensation" if the coil is good.

First way is an Ohms test, put your meter accross the primary connections, should be a low reading like .9 to 9 Ohms then check from the spark lead to one of the primary connections (if single lead...Lead to lead if double coil) should be 1 to 15 KOhms. Or hook it up to a battery, plug a sparkplug into the wire, ground the sparkplug body to the negative battery, touch the positive connection off and on repeatedly check the plug for spark. There are actual coil testing machines that can better duplicate running conditions, but, hardly any shops have them as coil failure is so rare that it would not be worth owning one. Another way is to swap sides on a dual coil bike and see if the problem swaps sides. You could also try some automotive machine shops some of the older ones may have a machine that can test it for you. If you are having a no spark problem with electronic ignition I would suspect the pickup coil, they fail much more frequently than the ignition coil.
