Well, mainstream rap is pretty much dead (although there are still a few stragglers out there still carrying the torch for good hip hop/rap). Personally, I blame the downfall of mainstream hip hop/rap on a combination of ignorant, immature rappers, greedy record companies and good ol' Corporate America. They've conditioned the masses and flooded the market with whatever "trend du jour" makes them the most money (which unfortunately embraces materialism, machismo, misogyny, violence and profanity) as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance. I think real hip hop is still alive and well, but most people are just looking in all the wrong places. For the most part, a lot of people don't have a clue what they're missing, simply because they refuse to put forth the effort to look below the surface (read: the mainstream). And as for those who shun hip hop/rap music...
Interestingly enough, I find that most people who say they don't like rap/hip hop and complain about rap's many vices don't realize that they're only seeing one dimension of hip hop. In other words, a lot of people don't know as much about the genre as they think they do (i.e. - the difference between an emcee and a rapper, or between rap and hip hop...and yes, there is a difference). Most of them base their opinions on the kind of rap that the mainstream media force feeds us day in and day out. I'm here to tell you that not all rap/hip hop emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity (i.e. - conscious rap, Christian rap, etc.). There's still some good, quality hip hop out there for those that bother to look for it, but you definitely won't find it in the mainstream.

i think they have good beats but there is really no meaning to what they are saying in their songs. THERE is a lot of profanity now and days all you hear is HOE this HOE that and DRUGS this and SEX that...but still it's not bad music to listen to
