British houses of the past were built very well and looked nice to the eye, timber-framed cottages, gracious georgian town houses, stout victorian terraces, spacious 1930's semis.
Why in the modern age do new houses resemble lego buildings. It seems as if they are built to a uniform patten and offer no scope for the imagination

I totally agree with you. Unfortunately we have a rabbit hutch syndrome in the UK now and most new properties are small with cardboard walls. It's high density housing and if a spare 50 square feet of land can be found then it's guaranteed that 6 months later there will be a block of flats standing on it.

It's no wonder we are such an angry race these days, there is no personal space any more and what assaults our vision are ugly, ugly buildings.

i am having problems with this type of housing myself. i have rebuilt the whole house in the last 3 yrs, including adding a conservatory, but we have a flat roof and no loft. we would like to build a traditional roof and add an attic bedroom. getting planning permission tho is almost impossible as this would change the look of the house too much, making it too different from the rest of the housing stock on the estate.

There seems to be a greater need to confirm and belong amongst people these days. Can't blame housebuilders for giving the public what they want.
