You would have to take a bus from Rijeka.
(5-10mins east of Opatija; buses all day to and from)
If you were coming from Opatija, you'd probably have to get a bus to Rijeka, then change buses at 'Zabica' bus station to get to Plitvice. More than likely you'll have to get a bus to Split from Rijeka as well.
See if you can get info at www.autotrans.hr.
Have fun, Plitvice is gorgeous!!

As for line Plitvice-Split, you can check it here:
http://www.ak-split.hr/EN/vozni.red/VozniRedDolazaka.aspx
On the other hand, as I know, the bus-line Opatija-Plitvice (or Rijeka-Plitvice)doesn't exist!
I believe you'll have to contact some of the travel agencies who organize daily trips to Plitvice. I suppose you might arrange with them to pay just for a one-way ticket, not the whole trip.
I'm not sure if you'll have any luck, but here is one such travel agency, maybe you could contact them:
www.generalturist.com/.
Also, I'm sure that some hotels in Opatija have daily trips for their guests, so maybe that would be a good option for you.
