Because it's a lot more acceptable than saying "No, I'm not fine, and if you don't f*ck off and leave me the h*ll alone I'm gonna rip your godd*mn throat out and feed it to my dog!"

Fine (answered, i'm done and we're both on our way)
Now that you ask; my in-laws-are visiting today and uncle
charlies still on a toot with my wife's aunt that has the gout
because my uncle Alvin wouldn't buy her bananas. But enough
of that for now, cause haven't talked with you since I got my
last proctologists report -- that was just after the kids came
down with disentary that they had caught from the dog. It
wouldn't have been so bad if the dog hadn't eaten the neighbors cat and gotten us into the middle of a lawsuit
that looks like it's going to bankrupt up.
like I said "Fine"

Because the rest of the world doesn't need my baggage. And sometimes it's not really anything to do with them anyhow. Not that I'm not grateful for some concern, but some things are best kept to myself, I think.

It's a reflex for me. If my arm was chopped off, and someone asked me how I was, I'd probably say "I'm fine" before I even realized what I had said.

Even when I'm sad I am smiling...so people can't see if I don't feel good...the only persons I can not cheat on are my boyfriend,my mom and my best friend...they always realise when something is not ok with me...

I've been wondering about that...I think most girls do this because they want the guy to dig deeper. To ask them "Are you REALLY ok? What can I do to make it better? " and things like that. For attention, basically.

It is customary to say "I am fine", because most people do not really wish to hear about you trials and tribulations.

yes! It's only when ppl ask "how are you?" as a greeting. I utterly despise that! They don't honestly care about how you really are. It's just a stupid cliche greeting that I wish ppl would stop using!

if its someone in a store and they just ask coz they have to i say fine coz i know they dont really care.
if its my hubby i say fine coz im mad and dont want to talk about it then.
sometimes i say im fine coz i want people to think im fine and my problems r none of their business.
other times i just dont want to burdon people.
