Valence electrons are the number of electrons in the outermost energy ring. You can also find the valence electrons for the first twenty elements by looking at their group number (Numbers at the top above all the atoms).

question makes no sense... If you are trying to find a valence number you need to know what period the element is in. It will be easier to find if it's not a transition metal.
