win xp is between 99-150 depending on where you buy it, save all your programs you want to keep to disk and re format your comp, sometimes places like circut city will check your comp for free to see what is wrong. They may be able to fix it with out the upgrade

Xp needs around 500mhz or better cpu, (really 1ghz or faster), 512mb of ram minimum (1gb recommended), a decent 3d video card, and a good 20gb or bigger harddrive (needs 1.5gb of free space).
If your machine isn't close to that, stay with win98. Save up for a new computer instead.

here are the system specs that you will need for XP home:

233MHz Pentium/Celeron or K6/Athlon/Duron processor (300 recomended)
64 MB RAM (128 recomended)
1.5 GB hard drive space
800x600 resolution
CD or DVD drive
Keyboard and mouse

you can check the speed and (maybe) your processor family in system info
you can check your RAM in teh same place
look in My Computer for hard drive space
look in display properties for the resolution
look in the front of your computer to see if you have a CD drive
look in front of you to see if you have a keyboard and mouse

to get to system info, go to start->programs->accessories->system tools->system info
if system tools isnt in accessories, look in the programs part

to find display properties, right click on your desktop and click on the settings tab
it is on teh lower left hand part of the window

and it probably costs $99 for the upgrade so you can keep your files, and just add about $50 for the full install disk
