I don't call my dad an "old man" but have you ever tried to call your mom "old" anything?... I think there would be a beatdown at my house if me or my brother said that to our mom ;o) haha

Call your mom "Old lady" and she'll pop ya.
Dad won't care about being called old

Men probably don't call their wives old lady in their wives presence. It's more like calling her the old ball and chain around a bunch of buds or something.

In this context, it means that they (your parents) are older than you in age thus the jargon. However, it's not very respectful to call them 'old'. Avoid it!
