I want to pursue a career in humanities, but I am not sure about all the options. would love to volunteer for some kind of service in a third world country, but in order to do so I need to get a good education.. Which means I would have to live in debt because I don't get paid to volunteer. I want to pursue post secondary education but I don't want to live in debt for the rest of my life. I love to travel and learn new things. Any ideas?

I'm not going to give you the answer you want. Sorry.

In my experience, travelling on business is far from relaxing, interesting, exciting, or rewarding. Business travel is tiring, vexing, aggravating, and it leaves you tired. Even worse, a lot of people who travel on business frequently gain weight because they have no regular schedule, and are forced to eat on the run.

Please, please reconsider pursuing a career in Humanities. I remember the Dean of my University showing some big-wigs around campus. I overheard him saying: "That table over there is where the finance majors usually study. They'll be pulling down 80g as soon as they leave here. See that table over there? That's the liberal arts crowd. They'll be working at Mc Donalds".

If you like to travel, find a job that will pay you well, and travel on your own.... on a real vacation. You might even try opening a business with a partner, and if you are successful enough, you could travel whenever you wanted.

Regarding service in a third world country, have you REALLY thought about this in depth? Conditions can be deplorable. Would you really be happy living in filth, not being able to bathe regularly, having to fight bugs and other insects while they make your sleep impossible?

There is an organization called "Doctors Without Borders". At least if you teamed up with them, you might stand a chance of living in clean, decent housing; I don't think the doctors rough it that much. While you may not have any medical training, perhaps they would be interested in having an assistant on one of their trips. Then you could decide whether this type of work is for you.

Last piece of advice: if you pursue a humanities major, you will have few options in the workplace. Employers laugh at these types of majors. They figure you really learned nothing of consequence.

Hey...I don't have any exact places or anwswers for you, but I know how you feel. I love travelling and I love third world countries. The people and cultures and scenery are so amazing and different. I also want to work overseas and right now I'm taking nursing. It opens up a lot of doors in tons of countries because they all need nursing care. You could get paid in many positions and yet you'd still be helping out the people a lot. I've also heard that getting a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is good. Especially in Asia, there are a lot of opportunities and I know people who did this and were able to pay of their university quite quickly!! These options may not be exactly what you're looking for...but just know..there is a lot of stuff out there..just keep looking and good luck!!
