In most cases. it depends upon the school. Some schools will not allow Freshmen in the dorms (or can't guarantee the space). Dorms help students integrate int the college community.

For what I've been researching so far that is indeed almost mandatory to a point. Freshmen are encouraged to stay in a dorm, single or double. The other option is to communte from home, which would take away greatly from the college experience. I will be going off to college soon and am planning to stay in a dorm. I have a friend who wants to rent an apartment and share the rent with someone else. It will be tough for her to get an apartment since she's an incoming freshmen. Maybe if she applies really early she may get an open invitation to stay in an apartment. However college do stress having freshmen live in dorms, and reserve the apartments for upperclassmen. If you don't want to live in the dorm you can live at home

For most schools, yes. Some even require that you live in the dorm all 4 years. However, there are always loopholes. If you have a child, ,if you are over the age of 25, if you have served in the military, if you are married, if you live with a family member, if you live within 30 miles and say you are commuting(even if you aren't going to, just list your home address as your residence) you are not required to live in a dorm the first year. Call your college's housing department and ask for their list of exceptions and any relevant forms needed to use one of the exceptions if they apply to you. I hated living in the dorm, but it's only one year, some people love it, maybe you'll be one of them...good luck :)

It all depends on the school. But there are ways around it sometimes even if there are rules about it. Some schools require freshman to live in the dorms, but it you have family in the same town that you can live with, you do not always have to live on campus. If you have a school in mind all I can say is contact them or get on their website and look to see what their policy is and if there are ways of getting around it.

That varies from one college to the next. In most cases, the dorms are on a 'preferred' list to make rooms available for out-of-town or out-of-the-country students. Then they are made available to local students. Many students try to stay at home because it costs less, others prefer the dorms because it gives them independence and allows them to participate more fully in college life (including BS sessions in the dorms)

At my school we are required to stay in the dorms our freshmen year. I think it depends on where you go and what their rules are
